Mon Tribal Discovery Tour in 1 Day

Nagaland
Known as the “Land of Anghs” or ruled by kings, the Mon district of Nagaland is home to the Konyak tribe. Once deemed essential for maintaining the fertility of crops and the well-being of the community, headhunting once lay at the heart of Konyak society, a practice that went hand-in-hand with the custom of tattooing.
Since the 1960’s missionaries have transformed the once fearsome region and today, with headhunting a thing of the past, elder tribesmen are the only ones left wearing these amazing tattoos. Now is the time to see them - before they are forever lost to history.
08.30 AM: Meet our guide for briefing on the itinerary for the day.
09.00 AM: Visit Lungwa. One of India’s easternmost villages, it straddles the border with Burma. Meet the Konyak tribal people in their traditional environment. Come face to face with the Angh aka King of Lungwa and encounter village elders. Hear their accounts of hunting human heads in bygone years and learn the significance of their facial and body tattoos. See the Morung (male dormitory), log drum and view point.
13.00 PM: Enjoy regional cuisine for lunch.
14.00 PM: Visit Hongphoi for more storytelling by members of the Konyak tribe. Walk around the village and take in views of the local thatched-roof houses.
18.00 PM: Drop back to meeting point – TOUR ENDS.

About the Guide
"I'm a woman entrepreneur from Austria and run a resort in Goa, India. I have rarely followed
the crowd, have always lived curiously and am unafraid to travel alone. But when the time came
for me to explore India, I wanted someone else to put together a fascinating itinerary and look
after the logistics for me so that I could totally let my hair down and have fun.
It was a huge stroke of good fortune that I found out about Sange Tsering - The Holiday Scout. Highly knowledgeable about the natural, historical and cultural treasures of Northeast India, well organized and committed to customer satisfaction in his approach, Sange is more than a qualified travel guide.
Given his contagious enthusiasm for discovery, Sange encouraged me to try everything and what started out as a tour quickly became a glorious pursuit of new life experiences which we found and swallowed whole for eleven straight days! Northeast India is a truly mesmerizing region, and I will surely return to travel with The Holiday Scout - the guide makes all the difference."
